Fashion Industry Shifts Power to the Consumer

FashionStake Shifts Fashion Industry Power to the Consumer. Fashion business as “participatory-commerce,” or p-commerce

FashionStake, which was founded in September 2009 by two Harvard Business School grads and is backed by Silicon Valley’s Battery Ventures (also an early investor in Groupon), allows consumers to help fund and shape designers’ collections before they’re produced. Consumers can browse the site’s existing coterie of designers and collections, and provide support for their favorites in four ways

Once designers have hit their funding targets (and if they don’t, none of their supporters are charged), they begin producing their lines over a one to two month period in collaboration with FashionStake, keeping supporters abreast of their progress. At the end of this period, the items arrive in FashionStake’s warehouse, pre-orders are shipped and the collections begin selling exclusively on FashionStake

New York – Top Global Fashion Capital 2010

New York Regains Fashion Capital Crown from Milan. New York has reclaimed the title of the world’s top fashion capital from Milan but the annual poll by The Global Language Monitor suggested the top five fashion cities are seeing competition from Asia and Australia

Topping the list for 2010 are New York, Hong Kong, London, Paris and Los Angeles. Milan, Sydney, Miami, Barcelona and Madrid followed. This was the first time the two Iberian (Spanish) cities were ranked in the Top Ten

This is the first analysis where the traditional Big Five (New York, Paris, Milan, and Rome) did not dominate the global fashion scene. The biggest movers in the list were Hong Kong, Madrid and Melbourne.

India continued to rise in prominence with Mumbai came ahead of Delhi, while Sao Paulo continued its leadership over Rio, Buenos Aires and Mexico City in Latin America

DIY Fashion Hits Land of Haute Couture

Paris. Do It Yourself fashion hits France the land of haute couture. In the realm of haute couture, where seamstresses concoct handmade gowns that cost as much as a car, one atelier has caused a sensation by purveying a different kind of made-to-measure.

Call it do-it-yourself chic The atelier, called the Sweat Shop, is a kind of Internet cafe where Singer sewing machines replace computers, and would-be fashion designers and creatively inclined clotheshorses pay by the hour to stitch their own garments

The brainchild of a Swiss makeup artist and an Austrian clothing designer, Sweat Shop opened in March, as France was still reeling from global economic crisis and unemployment in the country stood at more than 10 percent.

“It seems like a strange thing to say, but the crisis turned out to be the perfect timing for us,” said Martena Duss, the atelier’s Lucerne, Swiss-born co-founder. “After years of having this attitude that was all about consumption, people are now about recycling and saving and being creative.”

The space itself sets the tone: A dilapidated former printing press in the up-and-coming Canal Saint Martin neighborhood of eastern Paris, Sweat Shop is furnished with found and secondhand objects in what might be dubbed haute kitsch style. A couch set in mustard yellow velvet sits beneath a mounted deer’s head; grandma tschotskes and crocheted doilies cover every surface; the white sewing machines, provided free-of-charge by the manufacturer, sit atop refurbished school desks.

It costs euro6 ($7.90) per hour to use one of the Singers, but some prior sewing experience is required. For novices, Duss and her co-owner, Sissi Holleis, offer sewing classes five evenings a week. Because home economic classes have long been absent from the French public school curriculum, the lessons are Sweat Shop’s most popular offerings, Duss said. Beginners all start with the same simple projects — a pillow or a bag — but after that, clients come with their own fabric and ideas.

Thailand Fashion Expo 2010 set in October

Thailand Fashion Expo 2010 set in October. The Ministry of Commerce and the private sector are to host Thailand Fashion Expo 2010 from October 20-26 at Bangkok department stores around Ratchaprasong intersection area.

Commerce Minister Pornthiva Nakasa said the expo will be under the theme of “Gateway To World Fashion In Asia” in order to promote Bangkok as Asia’s fashion hub. The event will be held at CentralWorld, Siam Paragon, and Gaysorn Plaza, showcasing more than 40 fashion shows to demonstrate the potential of the Thai fashion industry.

Trade negotiations will be promoted throughout the seven-day fair among participants and buyers from leading malls worldwide and overseas importers. Designers joining the event include world-class British designer Vivienne Westwood and Thai designer Koi Suwannagate whose collections impress the United States’ first lady Michelle Obama, as well as worldwide fashion experts and academics.

As there will be over 300 foreign brands and more than 100 buyers joining the expo, Ms Pornthiva said she believed the Thai fashion industry will partly help push up Thai exports to grow 19 per cent annually as targeted and enhance Thailand’s fashion to penetrate the markets of ASEAN, the Association of South East Asian Nations and six other countries, China, India, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand (ASEAN + 6).

Meanwhile, MCOT president Tanawat Wansom promised there will be a reality show, “The Designer”, to be aired nationwide on Modernine TV so as to promote the public updates of such event. (MCOT online news)

USA Teen ‘Haulers’ Become a Fashion Force

Young shoppers who show off their latest fashion ‘hauls’ in Internet videos are attracting the attention of retailers looking for a marketing tool When 14-year-old Bethany Mota gets back from the mall, she eagerly models her latest finds for friends and family. And for tens of thousands more on YouTube

The rising high school sophomore from Los Banos, Calif., is a “hauler,” a term for tech-savvy young fashionistas who show off their purchases, or hauls, in homemade videos that they post online.

Bethany started hauling about a year ago and now has more than 48,000 YouTube subscribers who tune in to watch her show off her favorite back-to-school outfits (“you don’t want to wear heels and stuff, obviously”), big-volume mascara (“this is like my new obsession”) and perfumes (“summer in a bottle right here!”).

Asian Design Trend Autumn and Winter 2010

Asian Designer Fashion Trends Autumn and Winter 2010. Designers from China, Japan, South Korea and three other Asian countries have jointly presented the latest trends in Autumn and Winter 2010

Wang Qing, chairman of China Fashion Designers’ Assn. said that Designers from Europe and America have led the mainstream trends. But Asia should have its own voice. The exchange of Asian designers will help achieve this purpose. It’s hoped that frequent communication between designers could eventually foster Asia’s own international label

Autumn and Winter 2010 Trends. Black, beige, and grey dominate the collection by Chinese designer Cabbeen, who emphasizes the shoulders of the male form. With fine texture and cutting, the clothes bring out a chic and sharp look of today’s young man. The evening gowns for women took a softer palette. Biased cut and bold use of materials have delivered a understated look
